The climate crisis overheats schools with old, ineffective air conditioning. Students are suffering from heat exhaustion. This campaign will win the healthy, safe classrooms our kids deserve.

The Problem:

KIDS ARE SUFFOCATING IN SCHOOL

Temperatures in El Paso continue to increase every Summer, some days reaching 105+° leading to growing cases of fatigue, heat stroke and death in extreme cases. 

The Injustice:

POOR SCHOOLS SUFFER MORE

By researching the local area Amanecer People’s Project has identified 20+ schools in EPISD using outdated swamp coolers located mainly in poor neighborhoods that have been historically ignored by our local government.

The affected schools are:

The Opportunity:

THE IRA (Inflation Reduction Act)

In August 2022 the U.S. congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the largest investments in climate and clean energy in U.S. history. 

This bill provides billions of taxpayer dollars for a variety of climate projects to improve air quality, decrease emissions, and reduce spending on infrastructure. The IRA was specifically designed to help communities like ours that are likely to experience the more harsh effects of climate change.

Because of this bill children in El Paso can get safe, healthy classrooms that they deserve.

These funds can be used for projects that promote:

  • Energy efficiency

  • Solar energy

  • Energy storage

  • Bus electrification 

These projects would reduce energy and power the costs of interior lighting, HVAC and hot water systems, freeing up resources that can then be re-invested in our children’s education however, IRA funds are not automatically applied to benefit our communities.

We must organize for change to happen.

The Plan:

THE “ESCUELAS FRESCAS” CAMPAIGN

Amanecer People’s Project is currently running a campaign demanding that EPISD fix the A/C problem and guarantee that students are provided with the school that they deserve. 

We are hosting monthly meetings with parents, family members, teachers & staff to identify all of the issues that can be addressed with these funds & strategize how we can make sure that EPISD meets our demands.

In order to win the schools that our children deserve, we need to organize as a community to have our demands met. As individuals, EPISD- and any other body with decision-making power- can easily ignore us, but if we organize we become a force that can not be ignored.

The only way to build the power we need to create an El Paso that works for us and our children is if we organize for it.
