OUR STORY

MOVEMENT HISTORY:

It began with a struggle.

In 2019 our public electric utility - El Paso Electric - was sold to JP Morgan Chase, the world’s biggest financer of the climate crisis. A group of concerned El Pasoans pushed back against the privatization and monopolization of our natural resources. Thus, the organization that would become Amanecer People’s Project was born.

The "investment" in El Paso by JP Morgan was made based on our proximity to the Permian Basin, a hotspot for new fracking efforts. El Paso Electric quickly announced its plans to build a giant fracked gas plant near Barrio Chaparral, a frontline border neighborhood. The community sued and won the first moratorium on fracked gas construction in US history, but we didn’t stop there.

Despite our unparalleled capacity for shifting to solar power, El Paso's residents experience one of the worst levels of air pollution in our state.

Our coalition consolidated as a chapter of the Sunrise Movement to fight the use of dirty energy in our city. Since then, we have established ourselves as an independent political entity. We are dedicated to advancing the broad and intersectional cause of climate justice in one of the fastest warming cities in the country.

  • We pride ourselves on being of the border, for the border. Through our canvassing efforts, we engage with and learn from our community directly while building power. We strive to unite El Pasoans from the barrios to the suburbs in the intersectional fight for a livable, sustainable future.

    Canvass With Us

  • Corporate disinformation runs rampant in our community. We defend ourselves through skill-sharing and political education programs that instill a sense of pride in our community.

    Education Resources

  • We use community input and membership voting to identify opportunities for mobilization. This might look like: launching ballot initiatives, supporting existing policy proposals, identifying electoral candidates, and designing direct action campaigns.

    Our Current Campaign

We are guided by equitable approaches to the climate crisis that redress the impacts of climate change. Amanecer People’s Project seeks to mobilize El Pasoans in favor of policies that prioritize our health, environmental integrity, racial and economic equity, restore democratic power, and work towards destabilizing the systems of power that produce climate injustice.
